Behind the Ark

Behind the Ark aims to provide something for everyone in the community through its wide ranging programme of lectures and events of Jewish cultural interest.  We have an active programme of exciting speakers and regular visits to sites of Jewish interest – both here and in countries as diverse as Poland and China.

Previous events include:

Exhibitions on subjects including Jewish Music and Musicians, Synagogues Around the World, and Jewish Friendly Societies as well as on aspects of communal life in Raleigh Close such as Hidden Talents, (the hobbies and interests of members) and Where were you 50 years ago?, focusing on the experiences and roots of the community in 1945.

Overseas tours Troyes, Worms & Speyer, Pads, Alsace Lorraine, Bruges and Amsterdam, Provence, Bordeaux, and Venice.

Lectures which often relate to the exhibitions being shown Behind the Ark as well as covering many aspects of Jewish culture and history, such as on the history of Indian and Chinese Jewry, Hebrew Illustrated Manuscripts, and the Yiddish Theatre. Also a series of “A Day in the Life of featuring different professionals within the community.

Events Klezmer concerts, Jewish Comedy evenings. Judaica Road Show.

Visits “Behind the Scenes” tour of the National Archives, Kew, The Holocaust
Exhibition at the Imperial War Museum and Judaica at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
